Brake Safety Week takes place from August 24–30, 2025. During this annual initiative, law enforcement officials across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will conduct targeted commercial motor vehicle (CMV) inspections with a strong emphasis on brake systems and components.

What to Expect During Brake Safety Week

Throughout the week, CVSA-certified inspectors will perform routine inspections focused on ensuring brake systems are operating safely and within regulatory standards. This year, special attention will be given to brake drums and rotors – critical components that directly impact braking performance.

Damaged or worn drums and rotors can not only reduce braking efficiency, but also pose a serious risk on the road. Broken pieces can become dislodged during transport, potentially causing damage to other vehicles or resulting in severe injuries.

Any commercial vehicles found with brake-related out-of-service violations, or any other safety issues, will be placed out of service until the necessary repairs are made.

Data Collection & Safety Insights

During the campaign, inspectors will collect data on:

  • Brake systems and components
  • Brake-related violations
  • Vehicle performance via performance-based brake testers (PBBTs), where available

The CVSA will compile and analyze this data to provide a snapshot of the state of brake safety in North America, with results expected to be released later this year.

Beyond Inspections: Education & Awareness

Brake Safety Week isn’t just about enforcement – it’s also a time for industry-wide education. Inspectors, motor carriers, mechanics, and fleet operators are encouraged to use this opportunity to educate drivers and technicians on the importance of:

  • Regular brake system inspections
  • Preventative maintenance
  • Recognizing early signs of wear and tear

The CVSA also provides a variety of resources and checklists to help fleets and drivers prepare in advance.

Why Brake Safety Matters

Brakes are among the most vital safety systems on any commercial vehicle. Properly maintained brakes not only keep drivers safe, but also protect everyone sharing the road. By participating in Brake Safety Week, whether through inspection readiness or education efforts, motor carriers play a critical role in reducing collisions, minimizing downtime, and promoting a culture of safety.
